Why Our 5 Ton Hydraulic Uncoiler Stands Out

Engineered for tough jobs, this unit delivers:

  1. Tool-Free Width Adjustment: Hydraulic expansion fits coils up to 1,250mm wide—no downtime for changes.
  2. Torque Regulation: Prevents scratches/overfeeding with adjustable speed and pressure.
  3. Quick-Secure Locks: Pins hold coils steady during setup/changeovers.
  4. Low Maintenance: Sealed bearings and corrosion-resistant coatings extend life.
  5. Plug-and-Play Integration: Works with most roll formers; includes mounting hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a 5 ton hydraulic uncoiler?

A 5-ton hydraulic uncoiler is an automated, motorized machine used at the beginning of a roll forming line. Its primary job is to securely hold a heavy metal coil (up to 5 metric tons, or roughly 11,000 lbs) and safely unwind the material, feeding it into the roll forming machine at a controlled speed.

2. What are the standard coil size limits it can handle?

While specifications can vary slightly by manufacturer, a standard 5 ton hydraulic uncoiler is typically designed to accommodate:

  • Inner Diameter (ID): 508 mm to 610 mm (20 to 24 inches).

  • Outer Diameter (OD): Up to 1,500 mm (approx. 59 inches).

  • Coil Width: Often customized, but commonly ranges from 300 mm up to 1,250 mm or 1,500 mm depending on the roll forming line it supports.

3. How does the hydraulic expansion mechanism work?

Unlike manual uncoilers where the operator turns a handwheel to expand the mandrel (the central shaft holding the coil), a hydraulic uncoiler uses an internal hydraulic cylinder. With the push of a button, the cylinder drives an internal wedge system that forces the mandrel’s steel leaves outward, securely gripping the inside of the coil with immense pressure to prevent slipping.

4. What is a snubber arm (hold-down arm), and why is it necessary?

A snubber arm is a hydraulically or pneumatically powered arm equipped with a motorized polyurethane wheel that presses down on the outside of the coil. It is absolutely critical for heavy or thick-gauge coils because it prevents the metal from rapidly unwinding or “clock-springing” when the retaining bands are cut.

5. How does the uncoiler match the speed of the roll forming machine?

Motorized hydraulic uncoilers use a loop control system. The material droops into a loop between the uncoiler and the roll former. A sensor (often an ultrasonic sensor, photo-eye, or a physical mechanical arm) monitors the depth of this loop.

  • If the loop gets too small (the roll former is pulling metal faster than it’s being unwound), the uncoiler speeds up.

  • If the loop gets too deep, the uncoiler slows down or stops to prevent slack.

6. Do I need a hydraulic coil car with a 5-ton uncoiler?

While not strictly mandatory, a hydraulic coil car is highly recommended for 5-ton systems. Loading a 11,000-lb coil directly onto a mandrel with a forklift or overhead crane can be dangerous and easily damage the uncoiler’s spindle. A coil car lifts the coil hydraulically and drives it smoothly onto the mandrel, ensuring perfect alignment and vastly improving workplace safety.

7. Can a hydraulic uncoiler run in reverse?

Yes. The electric drive motor is typically bidirectional. This allows the operator to reverse the uncoiler to tightly recoil partially used material before removing the leftover coil from the machine and returning it to inventory.

8. What is the main advantage of a hydraulic uncoiler over a manual one?

The core advantages are safety, efficiency, and capacity. Expanding a 5-ton coil manually takes immense physical effort and time. Hydraulic expansion allows for rapid, secure coil changes in minutes. Additionally, the motorized unwinding and braking mechanisms handle the immense rotational inertia of a 5-ton coil safely, which a passive manual uncoiler simply cannot do without risking material damage or worker injury.
